When a customer going to a grocery store is referred to as a guest, you know something is special. United Supermarkets is a Lubbock, Texas-based supermarket chain founded almost 100 years ago. Focused on providing intense service to customers, the company’s annual sales are $1.1 billion from its 46 locations throughout Texas. In recent years, the company developed Market Street, a flagship gourmet food store whose motto is helping our guests find solutions to everyday living. Last year, United Supermarkets decided to expand its concept of finding solutions for guests and went to its long-time partner, White’s Pump Service & Supply of Lubbock, Texas, for help. United knew that White’s Pump would not only meet, but exceed, its demand for quality and service. Bill White, president, and Dale White, vice president, had done 20 locations for the company over the years. A Taste of Market Street would be a 1,300 square-foot mini version of a Market Street storecomplete with fuel stationand would be located within the confines of the main store’s parking lot. This smaller store is not to be confused with a convenience store. It offers fresh produce, gourmet meals, sushi, a bakery and a drive-through pickup window for dinners to go. White’s Pump installed all the fuel equipment, as well as the concrete. United chose double-walled fiberglass tanks and piping for product storage. They added Smart Merchandising to their Gilbarco dispensers. Bill White pointed out to United that the screen display would show inside specials and coupons to encourage inside sales. To welcome United’s guests and to provide protection from the elements, a canopy would be needed over the fueling area. White turned to Sales Rep Betty Taylor of Monitor, Inc. who assured him that both his and his customer’s high standards could be met by her company. Says Taylor, We want our distributor to have confidence in us that, together, we can make sure their customer is pleased with them. The Monitor team, including Danny Carney, engineering, and Randy Ranking, scheduling, made sure the 50 ft. x 71 ft. canopy would be a welcoming and useful component to a Taste of Market Street. The project, the first of its kind for United, was complete in December 2006, and marked the first of additional Taste of Market Street stores for White’s Pump and Monitor. |
