Interpet Pioneers Vapor Recovery in Turkey

While petroleum equipment manufacturers and distributors in the United States must meet rigorous vapor recovery standards, in Turkey, central vapor recovery is not yet mandated by law. But for Interpet Ltd., preparing customers for tomorrow's world means investing in new technologies today.

The OPET station is the first in Turkey to employ Stage II vapor recovery technology.

In July 2008, the Istanbul-based company installed OPW Stage I and Stage II vapor recovery systems at OPET Maslak Mehmetcik Vakfi, one of Turkey's top-selling stations and the first station in the country to employ a Stage II application.

Interpet installed the OPW CVS2 system, which uses one central vacuum pump in the station to control 16 fueling points simultaneously. Because of the OPET station's large size, Interpet installed two central vacuum pumps to regulate the site's 30 fueling positions. The vapors collected in the petroleum tanks are then transferred to tankers for refilling at the station, eliminating waste.

Because vapor recovery is not a legal requirement, many oil companies in Turkey are hesitant to invest in the costly technology. “The incentive to invest in vapor recovery because it is environmentally friendly is not seen as a feasible venture for the players in the market,” says Interpet's Business Development Manager Tuten Aluc, “but the oil company we are working with appreciates the need for a better environment.” Aluc expects that the technology will soon become an area of interest for all major oil companies in Turkey. “We consider this project the beginning of a new era in Turkey.”
